Balderdash {0}

The last few weeks when we finish with Discipleship on Sunday nights we’ve played Balderdash. Tonight The Movie “The Nut Farm” came up and here is what anonymous Emily Currey put as the movie description. Made me laugh and I thought it would make you laugh as well.

“The movie takes place on a dairy farm. The dashing young farm boy falls in love with a girl only to find that she is lactose intolerant. He despairs of ever marrying her and leaves. The girl, heart broken, changes the farm into a nut farm and invites him back, keeping the transformation of the farm secret. He comes back and dies, because he is allergic to nuts.”

A Tale Of Three Beds {4}

This past week Pastors Nathan, Tony and I had our anual retreat to discuss the upcoming year and to spend time in prayer for the familie of Redeemer and each other. I thought it might be fun to show you the sleeping arrangements. In the end the heater was in the living room so even thought I couldn’t get a bed. I made out like a bandit.

James 4:1-10 {0}

James 4:1-11,

“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

1. What causes quarreling and fighting?

2. What causes discontentment? What is key to being satisfied with what God has provided?

3. What is root of unanswered prayer?
Consider
Psalm 34:15
The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.

Psalm 145:18-19
The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. 19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.

Isaiah 1:15
When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.

John 15:7
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

1 John 5:14-15
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

Matthew 6:9-10
Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10   Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

4. How does James tell us to view our pursuit of selfish ambitions.
Consider
Luke 16:13,
“No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

Romans 8:5-8,
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

5. How should we interpret verse 5?

6. Why does grace come only to those who are humbled?

7. What does it mean to submit to God in verse 7?

8. What is the devil’s desire for our relationship with God?

9. What attitude does James encourage in verse 8-9?

Next week read James 4:11-17
