GSC Christmas Program 2012: Pics & Videos {0}

GSC 2012 Christmas Program

Everyone who came today did a fantastic job celebrating the birth of Christ with the residents of the Good Samaritan Center this morning. It was a great time. Unfortunately I didn’t take many photos this year since I couldn’t get a good angle on the piano, but I’ll post a few to remember this great event. Also a couple of videos as well. Thank to everyone who came out today. The videos look much better if you switch the quality on them to HD found at bottom of the video.

Brookie made a good friendship with Elee. He told us a story about a cat that brought a snake into the GSC and sat on the couch while it ate it. He also gave Beckham a stuffed dinosaur.

Support Zach Lutz

Apr 17, 2012

Support Zach Lutz {0}

One of our Redeemer children, Zach Lutz will be an Intern with BEAMM (Border Evangelism And Mercy Ministry) this summer. BEAMM is a subgroup of our denominations missions organization MTW (lots of initials thrown around this one is Mission to The World).

I asked him to make a video that gives a little info about what he’ll be doing this summer and how you can help. You can watch the video below and you can visit his website, http://zalutz.blogspot.com to stay up to date with how to pray for him as well as how to give financial support to him.

I expect this summer Internship will be a huge benefit for Kingdom ministry on the border as Zach ministers. I also believe this will do wonders for training and preparing Zach for wherever God leads him to preach the Gospel. If you can pray (and you can) please look at Zach’s request and pray. If you can give anything financially at all please visit his site and click on the donate button.

In-Town Retreat: Help Needed

Mar 5, 2012

In-Town Retreat: Help Needed {0}

We currently have over 30 students signed up and just four host homes and two drivers. I’m reposting this in the hope that you’ll consider helping with this event.

This year we are combing The In-Town Retreat with the Progressive Dinner.

This retreat is about 24 hours. Students stay in groups of about 5 in host homes over night based on age and gender. Info below, email me if you have any questions or desire to help make this happen.

Who: 6th – 12th Grade
Date: Friday March 23rd 7 PM to Saturday March 24th 2pm.
Cost: Free
Teaching Theme: Jesus is Lord, God as our number one priority.
Where: At New Hope, groups staying overnight in homes.

What We Need From Y’all to Make This Happen

1. Host Homes for Students to Stay the night – Students can sleep on ground we ask you to provide some light snacks at night and provide them breakfast in the morning. (pick up at night and drop off in the morning is helpful, but not required, we can help with that)

2. Housing Drivers – Some who can help drive students to their host home and/or drop them off at church the morning after.

3. Progressive Lunch Drivers – Be willing to pick drive a group of students around 11 AM Saturday until around 2 PM Saturday as we all travel from home to home for the Progressive Lunch. You get to take part in the progressive lunch which has traditionally had some great food.

If you are interested in hosting some students in your home or driving any part of it let me know at bhough@redeemer-pca.org

Sermon Notes: Gospel Solutions for Trials

Jul 10, 2011

Sermon Notes: Gospel Solutions for Trials {0}

Nathan Currey
Gospel Solutions for Trials
July 10th 2011

You can listen to this sermon at http://redeemer-pca.org/sermons

James 1:2-4

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 1:12-15

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Don’t compare your trials to others, either you will down play your own and miss what you could learn from God bringing this to your life or you will pridefully think no one has faced what you are facing.

I. Various Trials

A. Trials – Greek word,  πειρασμός to mature and grow as God’s children

B. Testing – proved or tried, like testing metals

C. Temptation – v.13 same Greek word as trial, context different, goal different.

Hebrews 4:15, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

Job shows both trials and temptations

Devil wants to temp Job to stumble and curse God

God wants to test Job to prove His love of God

II. Various Responses

A. Joy & Steadfastness leading to life

Steadfastness – to remain under. hupomone,   ὑπομονή

When we remain steadfast we receive the crown of life.

Trials is the path to growth.

Thomas Watson on the good of temptations, trials

  1. Temptations take us to god in prayer
  2. They push us to fight sin
  3. Abates swell odd pride, brings us low.
  4. Show are heart is faithful to christ, this test our loyalty.
  5. Makes us fit to comfort others in same distress. Weep with those who weep
  6. Stirs eternal compassion of Christ. Christ intercedes and prays for us.
  7. Makes saints long more for heaven. The less comfortable earth is the more desirable heaven is, 2 cor 4
  8. Engage the strength of christ as he gives fresh grace.

B. Lured and Enticed leading to Sin & Death (v.14-15)

Devil wants you to sin.

Note, temptation is not the sin, giving in is.

Seed of faith vs seed of flesh.

1 Corinthians 10:13, temptation is common, God will give you way of escape.

III. Various Purposes

Duet 29:29, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

God doesn’t promise he’ll reveal his purpose.

In trials we tend to ask, why God? Why me?

A. To Present us Perfect & Complete

God has purpose, he is in control, he is sovereign.

Romans 8:28-29, careful how you bring this to someone who is in a trial.

What is the good?

Clash of titans? What is this movie he speaks of? I blame there being nothing interesting to watch on Netflix.

Google says this is what he is talking about, I can’t imagine anyone watching more than 30 seconds of this.

B. To Refine our Faith

Job 23:10, “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.

refines like gold.”

Zach 3:13, ? Nope, not sure correct reference

If discipline it is because God loves you as a child

James McDowell went to Word regarding trials, wrote book.

Essay questions you could be given in life, especially as it deals with trials.

1. Do you believe God is in control?

2. Do you believe God is good?

3. Will you wait on Him until darkness becomes light?
