High School Sunday School

2008
03.07

This Sunday the High School begins studying the book of Ephesians. While Brian will teach this Sunday the rest of the quarter will be taught by Matt Austin. For those of you who don’t know Matt and his wife Mary Katherine attended Oklahoma State University before coming to Kansas City where he is pursuing an MD. That is fancy talk for to be a doctor. Anyway to prepare for Sunday School this week simply read the first 14 verses of Ephesians which are listed below in the ESV. Look forward to seeing all y’all after a long trip to Texas.

“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus:Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In lovehe predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insightmaking known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”

Surrounded By Enemies

2008
03.01

“That Incredible Christian” is a collection of writing from A.W. Tozer. Below is paragraph from this book which I have found especially encouraging and challenging. I’ve added some questions below to help us think about the ideas Tozer pushes into the light.

The Secret to Life is Theological

“Whatever keeps me from the Bible is my enemy, however harmless it may appear to be. Whatever engages my attention when I should be meditating on God and things eternal does injury to my soul. Let the cares of life crowd out the Scriptures from my mind and I have suffered loss where I can least afford it. Let me accept anything else instead of the Scriptures and I have been cheated and robbed to my eternal confusion. The secret of life is theological and the key to heaven as well. We learn with difficulty, forget easily and suffer many distractions. Therefore we should set our hearts to study theology. We should preach it from our pulpits, sing it in our hymns, teach it to our children and make it the subject of conversation when we meet with Christian friends.”

Personal Questions

  1. Have I read my Bible lately? If not what has kept me from it?
  2. How might I fight this “enemy” tomorrow and the next day?
  3. How am I teaching my children (or my friends) what I’ve learned in my Study?
  4. How can Scripture/Theology be implemented into conversations with friends and family?

Senior Showcase Tonight!(Tuesday): April Cervinka

2008
02.18
Senior Redeemer student and High School senior April Cervinka along with her 2008 home school graduating class is putting on a Senior Showcase tonight. At this event April will be playing a violin duet with a friend, but I’m told this is no ordinary duet. No, this duet will include twirling, Irish skipping, jumping, etc. I’ve heard it is similar to the world famous Celtic Woman fiddler performances. Not familiar with her? Check out the video below. Laura and I (and Joy) are going and would love to be joined by anyone else who is able to come. Also, April will be playing the harp, if you haven’t heard her play yet do so as time is running out. April will be away at Moody Bible Institute as a freshman next fall.
Interested in attending?
Where: Emannuel Baptist Church of Overland Park (10100 Metcalf Ave)
