Emily Jane Walters is a sophomore at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa (about 45 miles north of Sioux City, Iowa, which is the place David Letterman gets the Top 10 list from.). There are about 1,300 students at Dordt which is affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church in North America denomination. Their sports teams go by The Dordt Defenders though their football team is apparently not real good at that as they are 0-4 so far this year.

Emily is a double major in Art and History. When in Kansas we show her a great number of paintings and learn that most show a great deal about man’s fallen nature and redemption. In response to the question of what she’ll do with an art/history major she responds, “What can’t you do with an Art/History major?” Emily gains most of her exercise as a side effect of living on the 3rd floor of an on campus dormitory.

Best friend she’s met while at school is Nadji because she is incredibly random and fun to be around. Not only that, but Nadji has amazing cow milking skills and has promised to name a cow after Emily sometime (most would question the friendship at this point).

Emily’s biggest challenge so far is learning how to balance friendships and homework, as well as breaking outside of her comfort zone to try something new: like milking cows and making all names sound Dutch, Van Der Walters. Most of her time is spent school-related, such as going to class, doing homework and then in the evening she hangs with friends and apparently drives around in a plush chair. On top of all that Emily is a member in the Choir and the Philosophy Club learning about So-crates.

Her favorite class is painting where they use oil paints and listen to great music while painting man’s fallen nature and redemption. She gets to use Liquinn and Turpenoid which only draws a blank to myself. After all that time at school she enjoys day old donuts and bread from Casey’s Bakery, which is a long standing Dordt tradition.

Emily is most excited about going to a huge corn maze in a few weeks. We hope to have pictures as I can’t quite imagine what a corn maze is, in Texas you get shot for messing with people’s corn. In Texas you get shot for a great many things.

She attends church at Cornerstone in Sanborne which is 40 minutes away. Cornerstone is a part of the URC, a Dutch conservative reformed denomination (which means we can call it Van Der Cornerstone). They have a liturgy similar to Redeemer’s and the preaching is great. Her favorite part though is the people, older couples regularly invite the Dordt College students over for lunch on Sundays.

Please continue to pray for Emily and that other Walter’s girl we hope to hear from in the future.
