Review: Breakaway February 20th

Tonight’s Study

Tonight at Breakaway we looked at Jesus’ interaction with the Pharisees in regards to whether his disciples were breaking the Sabbath when they picked food on the Sabbath. This lead to a discussion of each families’ practice of setting apart the Lord’s Day. I encourage you to think about what ways your family might set apart Sunday more intentionally for worship and rest. Perhaps having homework done on Friday or Saturday, I don’t know what it will look like for your family, but spend some time thinking about and then help your children to understand what and why you set apart the Lord’s day from the other six days of the week.

Tuesday night February 19th Pam, Ashleigh, Joy, Zach, Beckham, Sadie, Laura and I all headed out to watch April perform at her MPE (Midwest Parent Educators for inquiring minds) Senior Showcase. April and a friend first did a violin duet performing the song Butterfly. Later she played a few songs on Harp. You did a great job April! We are all really proud of you. The video below is of the “Celtic Woman” version of Butterfly. At a later date I’ll put up video of Amazing Grace on harp.

Breakaway Tonight!

2008

This week we will finally have the shaving cream hair contest (I expect some hair styles as cool as Beckham above) and study Mark 2:18-28 which covers fasting and the Sabbath. Parents, I encourage you to talk to your children about your family’s view of practicing a Sabbath rest. If you want to study it more you might look at the Westminster Confession of Faith’s section on the Sabbath. I’ve put it below (click on read the rest of this entry) along with some relevant Scripture texts for your convenience. (more…)

Last week at Breakaway we studied Mark 2:13-17 where Christ dines with Levi the tax collector. We also played ultimate musical chairs with the elementary students and Chariot Races with the Junior High. Before the night began some of the guys learned you don’t have to be 7 foot to dunk.

Senior Showcase Tonight!(Tuesday): April Cervinka

2008
02.18
Senior Redeemer student and High School senior April Cervinka along with her 2008 home school graduating class is putting on a Senior Showcase tonight. At this event April will be playing a violin duet with a friend, but I’m told this is no ordinary duet. No, this duet will include twirling, Irish skipping, jumping, etc. I’ve heard it is similar to the world famous Celtic Woman fiddler performances. Not familiar with her? Check out the video below. Laura and I (and Joy) are going and would love to be joined by anyone else who is able to come. Also, April will be playing the harp, if you haven’t heard her play yet do so as time is running out. April will be away at Moody Bible Institute as a freshman next fall.
Interested in attending?
Where: Emannuel Baptist Church of Overland Park (10100 Metcalf Ave)
When: Tuesday, February 19th
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Review: Junior High Hangout at Reymond’s

2008
02.18

Saturday February 16th Redeemer and WCA Junior High students got together for fellowship in the Reymond’s basement. We played Wii, Apples to Apples board game, ate hotdogs (quickie mart style), played air hockey and had a ton of laughs simply hanging out. To see all the pictures click on this link.

The game Apples to Apples works by placing one green card down (with adjective on it) and then everyone puts in one of their red cards anonymously trying to make a close (or funny) match with that card. A judge decides who wins and that green card is awarded to the winner. At the end of the game just for fun it is said that your green cards describe who you are. While there is no truth to this the results can be funny. To see everyone’s results follow the link to the right. (more…)
